A deep area of low pressure, named Storm Nils by Météo-France and also known as Storm Ulrike in parts of Europe, impacted France, Spain, and Portugal between Tuesday February 10 and Friday February 13. The storm brought strong winds, heavy rainfall, and heavy snow to much of western Europe, which has resulted in property damage, power outages, and widespread travel disruption. Southern France and north-eastern Spain were the most impacted by the storm.

Gezani made landfall over eastern Madagascar, just north of Toamasina, at around 16:00 UTC (19:00 local time) on Tuesday February 10. At landfall Gezani had 10-minute sustained wind speeds of 185 km/hr (115 mph). This corresponds to an as an intense tropical cyclone on the Météo France tropical cyclone intensity scale and is equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Widespread catastrophic damage has been reported in Toamasina, where 75 percent of the city has been destroyed according to officials. In Madagascar approximately 102,000 homes and 1,359 schools have been flooded, damaged, or destroyed. 62 fatalities, 13 missing people, and 804 injuries have been reported. The system weakened following landfall as it crossed Madagascar and exited into the Mozambique Channel. Gezani restrengthened to a tropical cyclone in the Mozambique Channel, and bypassed Mozambique offshore of Inhambane on Saturday February 14. In Mozambique, Gezani caused widespread damage in Inhambane province. 316 houses were destroyed and 1,855 were damaged. Gezani then tracked back towards south Madagascar, curved south, and bypassed well offshore the southern tip of Atsimo-Andrefana. Gezani is currently a post-tropical cyclone in the southern Indian Ocean and is forecast to dissipate in the next couple of days.

A significant and widespread cold weather outbreak and winter storm brought frigid temperatures, significant ice accumulation, sleet, and heavy snowfall across the central, southern, and eastern U.S. and Canada between Friday January 23 and Monday January 26. Significant ice accumulation and freezing temperatures have resulted in long-duration power outages, extensive tree and power pole damage, and extremely dangerous travel conditions across the U.S. and Canada. More than 1 million people across the U.S. experienced power outages. Over 220,000 people, predominantly in Tennessee and Mississippi, remain without power as of Friday January 30. A state of emergency was declared in 24 states. Mississippi was one of the worst impacted states with 223 properties, 10 businesses, and seven farms affected either damaged or destroyed. More than 50 fatalities have been reported. More than 43,000 flights were disrupted across the U.S. since Friday January 23.
